Legal Complaints

Kosher slaughter is recognized as humane by Congress and so is exempt from the U.S. Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act (HMSA). Naturally, if the exemption is to stand, kosher slaughter law must be followed.

On November 29, 2004, PETA filed a detailed complaint with the USDA asking that the agency 1) immediately suspend inspection services necessary to operate a slaughterhouse, 2) withdraw the grant of federal inspection, and 3) investigate and prosecute criminally all culpable parties. In our complaint, we point out that our investigator filmed the slaughter of 278 animals, 25 percent of whom remained conscious for a significant period of time. After a statement by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge indicated that Postville-based slaughterhouse AgriProcessors, Inc., is subject to the local cruelty-to-animals statute, PETA formally called for charges against the company at a news conference at the office of The Honorable William J. Shafer, Allamakee County prosecutor. Click here to read the full complaint.
