Smithfield Accident Photo Gallery

March 2004

This pig was killed in the Smithfield truck accident.

Smithfield employees dumped the pigs' bodies into the back of a truck. Some pigs had not been confirmed dead before they were dumped in the truck.

A Smithfield employee shoots a bolt into the brain of a dying pig. The captive-bolt gun is aimed at the incorrect part of the animal's skull.

This is another victim of the Smithfield truck accident.

Smithfield employees dumped the pigs' bodies into the back of a truck.

This pig was repeatedly shot with a malfunctioning captive-bolt gun. Her violent seizures and deafening screams dominate the video footage of this crash.

September 2004

This severely injured pig was left to languish for more than half an hour before she was finally euthanized by a veterinarian.

Employees from Smithfield's supplier corral some of the surviving pigs after the accident. Ironically, this was probably the first time that these pigs felt sunlight on their backs, after spending their entire lives confined inside a factory farm.

This injured pig's face is covered with blood after the truck accident.

Injured and dead pigs lie in a heap at the bottom of the crashed transport truck.

Two injured pigs languish on the ground without veterinary care while other pigs look on.
